Vi remained quiet, her expression deepening. She moved to another whorl, soothing it in circles until it shone. But I promise not to be obnoxious about it, if you say it's alright." Probably a selfish one." She cocked an eyebrow. Her fingers moved steadily, brushing cream onto a stippling of scabs. Vi turned under her touch, eyes appearing over her shoulder, silver and furrowed.Ĭaitlyn kept her focus on her work. Pulling back, Caitlyn reached for more salve. "For as long as you can stand it, let me spoil you." Leaning forward, she pressed a kiss to the curve of Vi's spine, speaking softly against her skin. Moving slowly, she lifted her head from where it hung heavy between her shoulders. "M’kay. Outside, the storm was forgettable, its gusts losing their fervor, its flurries veiled behind a lacework of sparkling white window frost.ĭabbing a finger into a jar of salve, Caitlyn smoothed carefully over a whorl of powder blue ink. "I'm going to ask you a favor." The fireplace had shushed its crackle to a breathy, golden glow. She and Vi were seated cross-legged on the bed, both in their flannels, Vi bare to the waist to allow Caitlyn to tend to a new tattoo.Īround them, the flat was quiet. I hope they bring you some comfort and joy.Ĭaitlyn broached the subject one night in late winter. I still want to write them and share them. Even fewer ever had any chance of being stitched into the plot of "Saltwater" main. I find my head is filled with ideas for soft little moments between these two, but very few provide the substance needed for a fully-fledged fic. Particularly, Caitlyn's intentional acts of love towards Vi (as this opening scene suggests). All will fit with this anthology's main theme of Intentional Love. Some may start as Twitter threads, others will be pulled from my stack of WIPs. Over time, this fic will evolve into a small compendium of "Saltwater" compliant one-shots, vignettes, and drabbles-short-and-long. Welcome to "Simple Things", a "Saltwater" compliant anthology.
